Austin Arbor Day Celebration & TreeFolks Ceremonial 1 Millionth Tree Planting

By September 24, 2014No Comments

The 2014 Austin Arbor Day Celebration will be held on October 18th at Boggy Creek Greenbelt.

To celebrate Arbor Day and the City of Austin’s 23rd year as a Tree City USA community, the City of Austin’s Urban Forestry Program is partnering with TreeFolks to host a tree planting and family friendly Arbor Day event at the Boggy Creek Greenbelt.  The festivities will begin at 9:00 am, when volunteers will plant 80 native trees and spread mulch around existing trees at the park.  Friends of Boggy Creek, Rosewood – Glen Oaks Neighborhood Association have collected donations from several local businesses to provide breakfast and to give away as door prizes for volunteers who plant and mulch trees that morning.  Volunteers will be entered to win a gift certificate from one of these generous businesses:  Gourmands, Hillside Farmacy, Eastside Cafe, Blue Dahlia Bistro, and Bennu Coffee.  Sugar Circus, Rockstar Bagels and Hot Mama’s will donate breakfast items for Austin Arbor Day volunteers and ThunderCloud Subs is providing lunch for the celebration afterwards. Besides the awesome door prizes and breakfast goodies, you’ll get to enjoy the fantastically satisfying feeling you get when you help transform a neighborhood park by planting a ton of new trees!  Sign up to volunteer here.

You’ll want to stick around afterward for the Austin Arbor Day Celebration & TreeFolks Ceremonial 1 Millionth Tree Planting.  Austin has a lot to celebrate this Arbor Day.  This is the City of Austin’s 23rd year as a Tree City USA community, a certification program from the Arbor Day Foundation that cities can achieve when they meet four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.  Because of the City of Austin’s commitment to care for our urban trees, Austin was recognized last year by American Forests as one of the nation’s 10 Best Cities for Urban Forests.  This year will also mark the passage of a huge milestone for TreeFolks, its volunteers, and partners.  Before the end of 2014, TreeFolks will plant its one millionth tree!  Since the City of Austin’s urban forestry program has been such an instrumental and guiding partner in this accomplishment, we’re excited to celebrate this milestone at the Austin Arbor Day celebration with a ceremonial tree planting during the City’s Arbor Day ceremony.
