Neighborwoods is a program sponsored by Austin energy that delivers trees to residential neighborwoods to plant alongside the street. These trees help to shade the streets aiding against the heat island effect. TreeFolks sends out staff into entire neighborhoods with a set of criteria for placing trees without interfering with utilities. If utilities are nearby (ie. powerlines etc.) you will be offered a smaller tree, otherwise a larger tree will be offered depending on the available space. When an opportunity to place a tree is spotted, a flag is placed in the spot identified and an order form is left on the door of the property owner. The participant fills out an attached, postage-paid card ordering the trees and agreeing to plant and water them until they are established. TreeFolks then delivers the trees to participants's doors with detailed planting and care instructions. The Neighborwoods program is completely free to all participants.
TreeFolks' staff survey's yards in specific neighborhoods from July through January. If you would like to have your yard assessed to receive a free street tree, please fill out this form and we will add you to our waitlist. A staff person will have a look at your yard and, if you are eligible, will leave a yellow flag in the appropriate location and a blue or yellow postcard on your door handle. Please mail that postcard to TreeFolks and you will be added to the next available delivery list. Please note that we will be delivering trees only during the planting season from October until March.
