Citizen Forester is a ten hour training course designed to cover the basics of urban tree care and installation. Workshop topics include: trees in landscape design, tree identification, soil health, pruning and maintenance, planting, tree biology, and how to safely climb trees with the right equipment. The program includes both classroom and field training. TreeFolks provides educational materials and the topics are taught by an array of professional arborists, foresters, and landscape designers. Participants learn the skills needed to lead a volunteer crew at a TreeFolks public tree planting or maintenance event. The next Citizen Forester class is scheduled for May 10 and 11. Contact us for more information or sign up for Citizen Forester at our Online Store.
TreeCorps combines tree maintenance education with volunteer work service in a wonderful partnership between TreeFolks and American Youth Works. Youth involved in Environmental Corps, or E-Corps, are carefully guided through the steps of pruning young trees in public parks and green-spaces. They learn how to prune for the health of the tree and the safety of our parks patrons while taking precautions for oak wilt prevention. This program serves the dual purpose of training young people in proper tree care while extending the life of our public trees in reducing potential growing problems for the trees that will make up the urban forest of tomorrow. Speaker’s Bureau: In addition to our major programs TreeFolks’ staff members speak to thousands of Central Texas residents from pre-kindergarten to senior citizens on various urban forestry topics. We spoke to over 7,000 people (not including tree planting volunteers) in the last year. If you are interested in a speaker from TreeFolks please Contact us.
Barkly: Barkly is TreeFolks' mascot. He's a nine-foot-tall talking, walking teaching tree who is available for classroom, fair, parade and other appearances. Kids of all ages enjoy seeing this towering emissary of the tree community. Please Contact us to book an appearance.
Tree Guides: We also publish the Tree Growing Guide for Austin and the Hill Country and the Fruit and Nut Tree Growing Guide for Central Texas (in English and Spanish). Both of those publications have been used as a template for local and regional tree growing guides across the country. The guides include wealth of information on tree species, tree planting and tree maintenance in a fold out poster with beautiful art work. You can download the web version of our Tree Growing Guide. The full Tree Growing Guide and the Fruit and Nut Tree Growing Guide are available from local nurseries or you may order from our TreeFolks Online Store.
