The cost of the tree, transportation, supplies, and planting can keep people from participating.

Providing a tree at no cost removes one of those barriers.

Through NeighborWoods, eligible Austin residents, Austin Energy customers, small businesses, and community spaces can adopt free trees. TreeFolks provides young trees selected for Central Texas conditions, along with information to help adopters choose a good location, plant them correctly, and provide long-term care.

The adopter provides something just as important: commitment.

A young tree needs regular watering, protection, and attention as it becomes established. Each neighborhood receives a score between 0 and 100. A lower score points to a greater need for tree investment.

The score is not a rating of a neighborhood’s people, culture, or value. It helps show where access to the benefits of trees may be limited.

The Tree Equity Score also does not make decisions by itself. Maps and data are most useful when they are considered alongside professional experience, local knowledge, available planting space, and the voices of community members.

Together, these sources of information can help organizations and public agencies make more thoughtful choices about where trees and other resources may have the greatest impact.

What Does a New Tree Bring to a Community?

A young tree cannot provide a full canopy immediately. But thousands of individual trees growing across Austin become something much larger.

They become canopy.

They become habitat.

They become shared shade and a more resilient community.

Tree adopters make this possible by doing the everyday work that young trees need. Watering during dry weather, maintaining mulch, watching for damage, and giving roots and branches enough room to grow can make the difference between a tree that struggles and one that thrives.

This care is especially important during the tree’s first years. A mature tree may look independent, but it often reached maturity because someone cared for it when it was young.

Be Proud of the Tree You Are Growing

When you adopt a free tree, you are not simply receiving something from TreeFolks.

You are joining a community effort.

Your tree becomes part of Austin’s response to extreme heat, limited tree canopy, habitat loss, and unequal access to shade. Its impact will grow slowly, season by season, alongside the care you provide.

You may not see every benefit today. That is part of what makes planting a tree so meaningful.
