{"id":2299,"date":"2012-04-11T15:49:13","date_gmt":"2012-04-11T20:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/treefolks.org\/?p=2299"},"modified":"2012-04-11T15:49:13","modified_gmt":"2012-04-11T20:49:13","slug":"tree-of-the-month-april-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.treefolks.org\/es\/2012\/04\/11\/tree-of-the-month-april-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"Mulberry &#8211; April 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2311\" style=\"margin: 10px 20px;\" title=\"Mulberry\" src=\"https:\/\/treefolks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_1260-e1334172413405.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"448\" \/>Mulberry <em>(Morus)<\/em><\/h1>\n<p>This tree folk&#8217;s fingers and lips are purple from researching the featured tree of the month.\u00a0 Mulberries are ripening <strong>right now<\/strong> and boy are they delicious.\u00a0 Mulberries are deciduous trees or tall shrubs with a lovely round crown.\u00a0 The leaves are broad oval or heart-shaped often with serrated margins and can be lobed or not.\u00a0 Two species of mulberry occur in central Texas: <em>Morus microphylla<\/em>, aka Mountain mulberry or Texas mulberry, and <em>Morus rubra<\/em> (Red mulberry).\u00a0 But to be quite honest, unless your looking at a really big shade tree (<em>rubra<\/em> has a short trunk and grows to 64 feet while <em>microphylla<\/em> stays a more diminutive size and is often multi-trunked) it is pretty difficult to distinguish between the two unless you&#8217;re a botanist or a mulberry farmer.\u00a0 If you plant a mulberry on your property you&#8217;ll want to choose a site away from buildings and walkways as the fruit are very messy and the roots shallow, which can cause problems with underground utilities.\u00a0 Mulberries are very popular with birds, children, and other wildlife.\u00a0 Some of my fondest memories are of scrambling up the lower branches of a large mulberry planted in an empty lot to gorge on the sweet purple fruits.\u00a0 Mulberry preserves are one of life&#8217;s great pleasures.\u00a0 To harvest a nice crop lay a large sheet underneath the tree and send a young scamp up to bounce on the branches above or give it a good whack with a broom handle.\u00a0 The ripe fruit easily falls from the tree.\u00a0 Berries that are still red and tart are my favorite for eating out of hand.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mulberry (Morus) This tree folk&#8217;s fingers and lips are purple from researching the featured tree of the month.\u00a0 Mulberries are ripening right now and boy are they delicious.\u00a0 Mulberries are&#8230;<\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[49],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2299","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-newsletter"],"aioseo_notices":[],"aioseo_head":"\n\t\t<!-- All in One SEO 5.0.1.1 - aioseo.com -->\n\t<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Mulberry (Morus) This tree folk&#039;s fingers and lips are purple from researching the featured tree of the month.
