I have a group interested in volunteering. How do I signup and what dates are available?
TreeFolks’ volunteer events are listed on our website at https://www.treefolks.org/volunteer-opportunities/. If you’re interested in volunteering for an available date, click on “signup” and fill out the appropriate information. TreeFolks will notify you via email a few days prior to the event with further details.
I have a group interested in volunteering at one of your events. Should the volunteers sign up individually or as one registration with the number of volunteers?
Either way is fine. However, because our events fill up quickly, we recommend registering your entire group at one time to ensure the appropriate numbers of spots are reserved. Once registered, that contact person will need to pass along any important information to the whole group.
I am under 18. Can I still volunteer?
All ages are welcome at all of our volunteer events. However, we ask that volunteers under the age of 18 be accompanied by at least one adult.
Can I bring my children?
Yes. All ages are welcome at our volunteer events. We ask that children are accompanied by at least one adult. For very young children, please make sure there is a one adult per two child ratio in your group. Because of the dangers with tools, planting holes, and other hazards in nature, we kindly ask that adults monitor their children at all times during planting events.
I have mobility/physical considerations. Can I still volunteer?
We strive to have meaningful activities for all ages and abilities at our events. Some of the terrain we work in is rugged, steep, muddy, and requires a real hike to get to while some of it is flat, sandy, and easy to access. If you want to volunteer, just email our Volunteer Coordinator at email@example.com!
I have a group interested in volunteering on a specific date but you do not have a scheduled event at that time. Could you create a volunteer event for our group?
TreeFolks is happy to coordinate a private event for your group for a donation of $5,000 or more. Not in your budget? We understand and are happy to recommend some other excellent environmental organizations that might have volunteer events on the date you need: Keep Austin Beautiful, Austin Parks Foundation, and Urban Roots.
I want to plant trees in Bastrop. Can I do that with you?
In 2017 we reached our goal of planting 2 million pine saplings in Bastrop. We are no longer planting with volunteers in Bastrop.
I want to volunteer to plant along the Blanco River but there are no addresses listed on the website. Why?
Our planting locations in Hays County are located on private, residential property. To respect the privacy of the landowners, TreeFolks does not list homeowner addresses on our website. TreeFolks will notify you via email with further event details including their address and parking directions a few days prior to the event.
I have no idea how to plant or care for a tree. Is this a problem?
Not at all! We will teach you! A complete demonstration will be provided at the beginning of each event to showcase the dos and don’ts of tree planting and care techniques. Supervisors will monitor each group to ensure the trees are properly planted and mulched and to answer any of your questions.
What is provided during volunteer events? Do we need to bring anything?
TreeFolks will provide water, coffee, and light refreshments at each planting event. Plan on wearing long pants and closed-toe shoes, and dress appropriately for the weather, especially if rain is in the forecast. Gloves, tools, and training are provided, but please bring a water bottle, hat, and sunscreen.
What happens if rain is the forecast?
Because the appropriate time to plant trees is during Central Texas’ rainy season, TreeFolks plants trees at volunteer events rain or shine. In fact, we hope for rain to water-in the newly planted trees! However, we will postpone or cancel an event in case of severe weather. If an event is cancelled, TreeFolks will notify all volunteers by email as soon as decisions are made.
