Fraxinus albicans - Sally and Andy Wasowski, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower CenterThe fabled Texas ash (Fraxinus albicans) is possibly our favorite tree on offer this season through NeighborWoods, a program offering free street trees to Austin Energy customers. This lovely tree has attractive feather-like seed pods called samara and brilliant fall color. Texas ash is native from the Arbuckle Mountains in Oklahoma to the Edwards Plataeu on rocky slopes in canyons and may obtain a height of 30 to 45 feet at maturity. Texas ash is rather difficult to come by in retail nurseries, so if you’re looking for an attractive tree for your front yard, hurry over to the NeighborWoods waitlist before we run out!
